Teaching Portfolio

My teaching philosophy grows from my belief that learning occurs when we enter a community with an open mind, heightened awareness, and piqued curiosity.

I believe teaching can facilitate learning by prompting and encouraging students to think outside of their comfort zone. By reminding students to look longer and deeper at both the subjects and concepts of their work, they will become more aware of their surroundings, both physically and ideologically. Critical thinking is a natural byproduct of heightened awareness, and a skill that is essential to being an active member of any community. I encourage students to examine themselves in relation to others and challenge their own assumptions by taking nothing at face value, and looking below the surface for meaning. I expect a great deal from my students, as participation is central to our success in the classroom, and to their success beyond the academic institution.
